ASB Queen Street
CPRW Fisher architects were searching for a bespoke solution for the ceiling lanterns in the central space of the ASB Queen Street branch. The problem was the new branch (which is the flagship branch on Queen Street) is located in a very deep internal space with no windows, and a lower than ideal ceiling further compressing the space. The idea was to create what would appear to be skylights filtering natural light into the space below. The decision to use acoustic paper sprang out of a conversation with Asona. Asona’s enthusiasm to try something different sparked Michael Fisher's interest to experiment with Asona's acoustic paper AOGami for the light well. The physical qualities of the acoustic glass mat composite paper being light and translucent became a harmonious fit with the space. The fire resistant AOGami cylinders that formed the lanterns are suspended on fine wires in clusters to create the illusion the lantern feature is suspended in space, not touching the coffer sides and allowing the light to glow around the edges and through the suspended feature. The clusters are made out of three base circumferences (150mm-250mm-350mm). These were then fitted into place onsite in the five coffered strips, creating an organic natural light well effect.
